Po Lin Monastery
Located in Ngong Ping, the highest part of Lantau Island, Po Lin Monastery is the most important Buddhist monastery in Hong Kong.
Founded by three monks in 1906, the monastery has more than a century of history behind it. Initially it was denominated The Big Hut, but in 1924 acquired its present name, Po Lin, that means the Beautiful Lotus.
The monastery grounds include the temple, the monks' houses, a vegetarian restaurant and several shops to buy incense. Next to the shops we will find incense burners of different shapes and sizes where the faithful and tourists leave their newly purchased offering.
In the temple are three Buddha statues representing the past, the present and the future and numerous Buddhist inscriptions. With a bit of luck during the visit you will have the opportunity to see the monks in full office.
The visit to the monastery complements perfectly with the visit to the Great Buddha (Tian Tan).
The best way to reach the monastery
In addition to bus 23, the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is the best way to get to the top of the mountain. During the 25-minute drive from Tung Chung, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, the mountains and the city.
